Student Insights: Shay’s Study Strategies
Shay Patel is a top student in Touro University California’s MSPAS/MPH program.
The pace of learning here at TUC is intense, which can sometimes be overwhelming even for those who have excelled at previous levels of education. We regularly ask students who are at the top of their class to tell us what study strategies they use to keep up. Here are Shay’s top tips:
1) Go over the lectures in depth and look up the material that you don’t understand as you go through the lecture so you stay engaged and don’t miss key points.
2) Do the objectives during class and highlight ones that the lecture did not answer, or ones you don’t understand. This way, you have a head start when studying for the exam. You really have to determine in which classes completing full objectives truly helps you. I find that in some classes I can skim objectives while studying whereas in others completing the objectives thoroughly is key.

3) Group studying is a great strategy. My group self-studies and then meets the night before the exam around 9 pm and does a group study until midnight. We go through the objectives and lectures and people take turns talking them out and helping each other learn concepts they don’t understand. Then, we quiz each other on big concepts.
4) Another strategy is studying with one other person; self-studying a lecture in depth and then talking the lecture out together. Then you move on to the next lecture. This way you are learning the material and then cementing it.
Hope this helps!
