Woman Physician Assures Parents Their Daughter Will Not Face as Harsh a Path as Predecessors

Congratulations on your daughter’s acceptance into medical school.  Like the first day of kindergarten, this launch is notable for parents as well as children. You may have some concerns about the stresses she will face. Having been there, I can tell you there will be many.  Not to worry, though. Times are changing.

So begins an open letter to the parents of female medical students (but really written for the students themselves, natch) by Dr. Kathy Stepien writing for the blog KevinMD.com. The rest of the message paints a dark picture of what women faced in the bad old days in medical school, residency and beyond: Rampant sexism, extending from hazing and mockery to outright assault and career sabotage.

Student Insights: Letter to a New PA Student

PA school requires a whole new set of study tools from your tool belt. Maybe you thought you had finally figured out what worked for you in undergrad, or while completing another master’s program. Don’t freak out, but welcome back to the beginning.

The pace is faster, the materials are more difficult, and the standards are higher. It’s okay, have your moment of freakout. But then take a step back and try and understand what Touro will help you become: Bigger, better, faster, stronger — wait wait wait . . . that’s Kanye, retract that! In all honesty, though, at the end of this program you will be faster. A faster thinker, a quicker test taker, someone whose synapses are firing and connecting more rapidly than the med students’ standing next to you on rotations.

In a way, priorities are everything. How our heart/mind weights our likes and dislikes, wants and needs, values and goals — these rankings, developed over a lifetime, are like the software code which runs under the conscious surface of our thoughts, guiding our decisions and actions.

Contentedly eating a malted at the baseball game because you prioritize joy and sugar? That will change in a jiffy if a line drive comes screaming at your head at 100 mph; your most basic survival programming will have you drop that treat, no problem, in order to better duck out of the way or put up your hands to try and catch it.

Student Insights: Summer Tips from D.O. Students

A few tips from fellow D.O. students on how to relax and reorganize yourself during the summer before the school year starts up again.

  1. Rest & relax should come first and foremost. It is important for us to re-find our humanness and recharge for the marathon of second year/board studying.
  2. Set a realistic goal and stay consistent. This may be reading something for 1-2 hours a day from 1st year material or previewing for next year. This may be doing 15 questions a day from a question bank. Whatever the goal is, don’t make it so demanding that you’re resistant to follow through. Start small and build on that. Continue reading

There is likely no adult on earth who has not avoided, at least momentarily, doing something they know they should do, and could thus be called a procrastinator. Many generally successful people like to make self-deprecating jokes about what “terrible procrastinators” they are. Why Is Procrastination So Hard to Stop?

Usually, when a person seeks relief from problems caused by procrastination, well-meaning and helpful people offer suggestions designed to replace one’s self-destructive habits with constructive ones. These might include:motivation.jpg.653x0_q80_crop-smart

  • Careful daily schedule construction where time is blocked off in reasonable increments and scheduled breaks, and keeping to the schedule is a top priority.
  • Using to-do lists or other task management organizational systems to break large projects or jobs into smaller, less onerous sub-tasks. Continue reading

Student Insights: Walid Gets Great Results Using Spaced Repetition for Test Prep

The pace of learning here at TUC is intense, which can sometimes be overwhelming even for those who have excelled at previous levels of education. We regularly ask students who are at the top of their class to tell us what study strategies they use to keep up. 

Walid Aljayosi is a student in Touro University California’s College of Pharmacy.

In my time as a Touro student, I have slowly gotten better and more efficient at using my time to study wisely.  When I first began school, I was all about spending entire days in the library toiling away and struggling to get all the information down. Humans were simply not meant to take in information this way.

Add Metacognition to Your Toolkit

Recently, I reported on spaced repetition. Today, I’m reporting on my students’ experiences with metacognition. While I learned about metacognition in my earlier life as a reading teacher, it is equally applicable to medical students who spend more than a little amount of time reading.
